TN Govt Announces CHENNAI: The weatherman has seen signs of severe cyclone 'Jal' weakening, though heavy rains triggered by its effect have already wreaked havoc in the city. But, the administration is not taking any chances.
Rains and gusts brought life almost to a standstill in the city. Roads and subways were flooded and a tree fell at a residential area. However, nobody was injured or evacuated yet.
More than 16 flights from different cities could not land at the airport and had to be diverted to Bangalore because of poor visibility. Visibility dipped well below 800 metres in the forenoon at the airport. Arrivals and departures were affected at the airport between 7.30 am to 1 pm.
Pilots who landed early in the morning reported strong winds and extremely turbulent weather 40 miles around Chennai.
As more rains are expected because 'Jal' is supposed to cross the coast by evening or night, Chennai Corporation is taking all efforts for rescue and relief operations.
The urban body has opened a centre to prepare food at Perambur Barracks road, for the 2,000 slum dwellers that live near Adyar and Cooum rivers.
"We have kept four boats including speed boats ready for rescue works. But, there is no water logging anywhere that requires rescue efforts. The situation has not reached that stage yet," said a senior official of Chennai Corporation.
Deputy Chief Minister M K Stalin visited food preparation centre at Perambur and also Ganeshapuram where motor pumps were installed to pump out water from the flooded subway. The urban body has already identified flood prone roads and has mobilized motor pumps.
