On September 9, 2009, get set to switch off extra lights at 9pm for 9 minutes. The 99999 initiative is yet another unique way to
encourage citizens to pledge their support to fight climate change. The climate change campaign has found support from an unlikely quarter, a collective of bankers from across the country who have conceptualized this initiative.

The All India Bank Employees' Association, along with Chennai-based NGO Exnora International, is involved with a nationwide programme to involve participation from all possible quarters to join in its annual `lights off' initiative. The association an umbrella body for 45 commercial banks, 90 regional and rural banks and all co-operative banks is promoting the idea in about 78,000 outlets falling under it.

"We are distributing leaflets and badges and have put up posters in all the affiliated branches. While the programme is definitely better planned and has a bigger outreach in the southern and western parts of the country due to Exnora's involvement, we are trying to reach out to as many people as possible through our branches elsewhere,'' said C H Venkatachalam, joint secretary of the association.

In Chennai the hub of 99999 activity the association is receiving support from even the municipal corporation. "This is only our second year and we hope to expand our reach before the initiative kicks off next year,'' he added.

Last year, the bankers organized the event on August 8, calling it the 88888 campaign. Next year, said Venkatachalam, the programme would aim at switching off non-essential lights for 10 hours. "The 1010 101010 initiative would be organized on October 10, 2010 during which we will aim at switching off lights from 10pm to 6am.

This campaign comes in the midst of a similar initiative of the Delhi government under which it organises a one hour lights-off campaign every third month.
